The Van Hornesville Community Corporation

Young founded the Van Hornesville Community Corporation as a non-profit corporation to promote the "well-being and well-doing" of the people of Van Hornesville and their nearby neighbors. Young had been born here in 1874 and throughout a distinguished career in law, business, diplomacy and, yes, agriculture, had always maintained his home in Van Hornesville. This is where he voted, and it was to this community that he gave the school which was named for him after his death.

Young characterized the Community Corporation as being "interested primarily in the development and care of parks and woodlands, and promotion of educational activities both through our school and supplementary to it." The VHCC office, pictured above, was built for him by Young's children. He described it as "the fulfillment of my dreams ever since I went to the little red schoolhouse on the loveliest site in Van Hornesville." This building, he said, and the vault it encloses, "will serve as a place for the collection and conservation of historical records, many already accumulated. Naturally all matters of historical importance to this area will find their resting place in the future in this vault."

The VHCC supports Young's vision by maintaining and improving several parks and properties in and around the village, through financial and hands-on support of the Owen D. Young Central School and its Outdoor Learning Center, through sponsorship of cultural and community events, the collection and maintenance of historical records and artifacts, and financial support of the Van Hornesville/Jordanville Food Pantry.
